Companion sketch #37: Cinder, the War Doctor’s companion from the new novel “Engines of War”- out today: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Engines-George-Mann/dp/1849908486
Obviously, this was a bit more than a “sketch” this time around.  I’m lucky enough to know George Mann (the book’s author) a little bit, and he gave me a heads-up that the book would give John Hurt’s Doctor his own companion (because you’re not really the Doctor till you have one).  We collaborated on the design, which was a huge geek-out for me, obviously. This may not be an official BBC-approved design, but it IS author approved.  Squee. :D
George said he kinda had singer Hayley Williams in mind for Cinder’s look, so I ran with that (probably in a lot less subtle manner than I would’ve if this were official work).  Her costume is kind of Joan Jett meets Snake Plissken.  Very much a post-apocalyptic punk Dalek-killer, to compliment the war Doctor’s own look.
And while I realize I’m a little biased, I can’t overstate this enough- go check out the book.  It’s everything I hoped for out of a Time War era novel (hopefully the first of many).  And you’ll never look at John Hurt’s scenes in “The Day of the Doctor” the same way again.

Classic Who // New Who Parallels → “There’s a tiny reference to that first year of Doctor Who in ‘The Caretaker’ which is the Coal Hill motto, on the wall of the parent’s evening: “a great spirit of adventure”, which is what the Doctor says about Ian and Barbara in ‘The Sensorites’. I thought that was a nice nod in the background.” - Gareth Roberts (x)

Why do you fly off in the box with him? Because it’s amazing. Because I see wonders.
