Marve Comics and Comixology just announced at their SXSW panel that they’re offering 700 first-issue/first-appearance books for free on Comixology until March 12!!!
OMG!!!!
The site’s hammered right now but this should be the link

Yeah, gotta just hit checkout over and over and over until it loads. Anyone know if you have to pay s+h?

Comixology is strictly digital only comics. (There’s a hard-copy side where you can sometimes set up a “pull” (subscription) with a local comic shop but I am pretty sure this offer is only for digital copies)

Also, comiXology is experiencing HUGE traffic right now, so if it doesn’t work right this second, that’s OKAY. We’re working on it! Plus digital comics never run out. We’ll get through this.

HOLY CRAP. I APPARENTLY MISSED SOMETHING TODAY!

Anon, no, there is too much. Let me sum up.

Natasha & film noir trenchcoats, Natasha & how she tries to save her enemies but not the ones that don’t deserve it, Natasha & 60s beehive hairdos fight me, Natasha & books, Natasha & Bucky, Natasha & Matt, Natasha & Clint, Natasha & haters to the left, Natasha & that DC crossover with Huntress that they should totally give me, Natasha & the fact that she once wore one earring that said “B” and one earring that said “W” and no one could tell her she wasn’t fabulous, Natasha & never being “drawn” by Greg Land again, Natasha & never. giving. up., Natasha & how she goes out of her way to mentor other women, Natasha & that new series that Marvel should totally give me, Natasha & on the rooftops, in the rain, Natasha & her own movie that Marvel should totally give me, Natasha & how she hurts people and means it, Natasha & knowing love is not just for children, Natasha & the fact that she left him, Natasha & her control, Natasha & her liberation, Natasha and ballet— not the fake memories, not the disguises, but those disciplined, aching moments she can be alone with her mirrors and rise and leap and turn and twist— just to feel herself be pointed and perfect for one moment she cannot hold onto, one moment they cannot take away.

Captain America v5 #49
There’s a tendency in comics, and all fiction really, for women in notably male-dominated vocations, ie punching people, to attribute it to male influence. She grew up with four brothers, or her dad wanted a boy, her boyfriend was into it, etc. It’s rare for a female character to just up and do something you usually perceive to do a man’s thing to do.
One reason I like the Carter girls is that Sharon became a SHIELD agent because her aunt and idol was a French Resistance operative. Her aunt. Not her dad, or uncle, or whoever. Her hero and idol is a woman.
Why’d Peggy join the French resistance? Because fuck Nazis, that’s why. She wasn’t involved with a French lover who was killed by the Nazis, her father wasn’t a soldier, she was studying in Paris when the Nazis rolled in, and Peggy Carter would have none of it.
Similarly, in the movie, Steve questions why a beautiful woman would choose to join the Army, but he’s just being a dork and never gets an answer. He never repeats the question and we never do learn, just like we never learn how Falsworth, Dugan or Bucky joined up. Because you don’t need to know, you kind of figure they did it because that’s what they chose to do. It isn’t much of a mystery why the men would take up arms for their country, and the screenwriters don’t treat Peggy any different.

it’s unfortunate that Sharon gets stuck with one of the most awful arcs frequently given to female characters in Captain America v5.
